This is the second day of the newborn baby hamster. Total 8 of them… *sweat*…

Today the babies look a bit darker in color, not as reddish as the first day. They make little sound “cuit cuit cuit” whenever they are hungry or need attention.

One mistake I made is, I keep giving her food when I don’t see her eating much since giving birth. End up I’m actually disturbing her too much. She went panicked and wanted to get out with her babies..  Next time, I shall just leave the food at the side and leave it to her to manage it. Luckily all her babies survived.

Where does mummy hamster want to go?

The day before delivery, my hamster, Siu Mai, looks really bloated. I was shocked as well, thought how come she became so fat.. then I suspected that she might be pregnant. I cleaned her cage that morning, and cooked boiled egg for her.

This morning, I woke up around 7am plus and saw a little baby in the corner of the cage!!! I shred more tissue paper for her. Then about 30 minutes later, the second baby is out!! I am so so excited for her!!

OK.. then the number of babies keep increasing.. O.M.G….  total of 8 babies by lunch time.. O.M.G.

She looks tired, but doing well..   the babies look really really cute. Baby hamsters are tiny, eyes are not opened yet, fur-less and certainly very fragile.

I got myself 2 hamsters today, have been thinking about it for quite a while but contemplating if I will be committed to take care of them.

After much thoughts, I bought 2 hamsters. I chose the hamsters which came over to my hand when I put my hand down into the cage in the pet shop.

Total of 3 hamsters, I asked the shop assistant to help me choose 2 of the 3 of with the same gender. So.. there ! Got my hamsters, my new pet

I named one of them “Siu Mai”, the smaller one.. and the bigger in size I named it “Har Kao” (Names of Chinese Dim Sum) :p

Not long after that… it turns out that one of my hamster is female (Siu Mai) and the other (Har Kao) is male. O.M.G….  thus there will be more O.M.G posts coming up in future.

Hamster in Bathing Sand

This is their bathing sand, don’t ever bathe them in water. The bathing sand is good enough to keep them from being smelly. Sand bath comes in a lot of variations. You will need to try to see which one is best for your hamster. Choose the tinier grains, or softer ones. Caring for hamster is just like caring for a human, baby human. It’s our pet anyway.. part of us in the family

They love to eat sunflower seeds (or it’s called Kua Ci in chinese), buy the unsalted ones from pet shop. Dry food, I mix with oats for them, fresh corn cut into pieces and veggies like Kak Kua (not sure what it is called in english, you can see from the pic) and brocolli. Each hamster has different preference on food, just like we human thus you will need to  observe and see which food they like best.

As for the bedding, some pet shop owners will advise you to use cat litter. Don’t!! It’s harmful to the little animals. Wood shavings are not the best options either, as it contains saw dust. I would think the best option will be lots tissue paper actually.. >”<  Buy the type that does not have a lot of debris when you shred it. However, if you are going to get wood shavings, get the softer type. The first type I bought was quite hard, fearing that will poke the hamsters and make them uncomfortable, I bought another one and I think they prefer the new wood shavings.
